MOTHER`S CHILDREN - Are You Tough Enough? EP (Taken By Surprise)

Wow. This is some catchy tuneage. "Sue Doesn't Live Here Anymore" is a classic pop-punk number that gets things started off just right. It's up-tempo, it's catchy, and it has lots of guitar. And things continue along exactly the same way. My only complaint, and this isn't a real complaint, is that there are only six songs. Don't tease me like that I want more. This is clearly a power pop band and not a pop punk band. (KK)

I really hope that you all followed my call up from OX # 92 in the meanwhile and have bought yourself a copy of MOTHER`S CHILDREN "That´s Who" Debut LP. So just to make it clear once again, there is no excuse ! The same as great as mentioned LP is this follow-up 12" from the Canadians. Power Pop Glam´n´Roll driven to perfection that should be spinning on your record player multiple times a day and that still is on a par with it´s musical archetypes. Take your personal hits from the first three Powerpearls Compilations add it up with the two episodes of Killed By Glam, listen to "Milk & Alcohol" and "She´s A Windup" by DR. FEELGOOD once again, don´t forget your BOYS, STIFFS and FAST CARS records and imagine you would be warped right back to the Seventies where you would be seeing all those bands live on stage, because this is the moment when you realize that you are dancing and beerspitting right in front of the stage of a MOTHER`S CHILDREN show. "More sweet, sweet rock and roll from the power-duo that brought us the SICK FITS. High energy pop-punk with glam and flash and straight up rock guitars. Fun and incredibly danceable, this album makes me love these guys that much more than I already did. Think T-Rex, the Boys, the Sweet and a touch of early Rolling Stones all putting on a massive dance party for all the girls. A touch of glitter, distorted bass, and fast tight punk drums. Bad boys singing sweetheart songs. "I Wanna Be Your Friend" is sing-a-long perfection and , like much of what MOTHER'S CHILDREN do so goddamn cute and sweet, you'll find yourself grinning and tapping your toes no matter what your into. "No Touch" and "Squeeze" feature Davey (MALE NURSE, MILLION DOLLAR MARXISTS, QUEBEXICO, STEVE ADAMYK BAND and more) on lead vocals, singing drummer Tim's songs. Although they fit nice and snug into this album they have their own unique flavour that contribute wonderfully to this tasty roller coaster of fun. Slightly more emotional and power-pop, as opposed to to fun-time rock and roll, they compliment the shake-it groove of the other songs perfectly making this album a whole experience as opposed to just a collection of whatever-the-hell-we've-been-playing-lately. Unfortunately my copy of this record got stuck in the mail so I didn't get to review the album art which looks like you'd want to look at it a lot from in the teeny photos I found online. Their myspace has a music video for "What'll Happen to all the Girls" that beats anything else I've seen in a long time. Go watch it!"

Mother's Children "...That's Who!" LP

Glam-rock/power-pop hybrid action from Ottawa's current kings of swing, riding high off the A-Side of their 7" which was a banga-banga humpa-humper. This thing shimmies and shakes from start to finish, absolutely bursting with exuberant hooks, liberal sprinklings of glitter and power-pop with some actual power. They kick it off in style with the cocksure swagger of "Shaky Sue" and don't let up until the dead wax sends the tonearm home. These kids have the chops to pull this whole thing off, the guitar playing is scalding and the drummer is a beast. Strong vocals which they split three ways and all four of them share the songwriting duties to great effect. Meaning it's chock-full of hits, mixing up the expected Slade/Bolan-style moves with the punk energy of The Kids and the sharp poppiness of The Boys. Other quality points: they don't do any covers, they manage to do their thing without goofy costumes or a schticky gimmick (which is something most Bay Area bands have yet to figure out), every single song is about girls and it's recorded really crisp and loud (which is what an album in this genre requires). Drop the needle anywhere on this thing and get a hook stuck upside your head. I'm not much of a fan of this sound overall, but this shit is done so well it transcends my genre specificity. I think it's mostly because of the fact that while they might be playing in a "lightweight" genre of sorts, they still manage to rock with some balls. Glam-pop doesn't have to sound wimpy, take notes here all you wannabe lo-fi popsters and bubblegum chewers; spend less time worrying about your platform boots and bowlcuts and concentrate on rocking the fuck out like these cats. I give it a month before Burger releases this on cassette. Scum stats: it's on Deranged, so watch out for limited test press versions and other "variations" on eBay...just get the black vinyl, it sounds better.(RK) (Deranged Records // www.derangedrecords.com)

Mother’s Children - That’s Who! (Deranged)

Being in Ottawa, it’s rather difficult to have a completely detached opinion about a band. Regardless of that, it’s no secret in (or outside of) Ottawa how ridiculously great this here LP is. You’re gonna love it - unless you’ve got shit for brains. Do you have shit for brains? You should probably buy this anyway, in that case. In can only aid you in your quest.

A strange fit on Deranged, “That’s Who!” would be sure to make a mark on any label’s discography. This LP would stand out in stack of records, regardless of genre. Besides, one look at the cover art and I’m sure no one will pick this up thinking it’s The Age Of Quarrel 2, or anything. You know what you’re getting into before you have a chance to take the LP out of the jacket, fart and drop the needle.

What you’ll find is full length packed with Canadian power-pop hooks. Note the “Canadian” reference, as it is true: Canada has it’s own trademark power-pop sound. Love it or hate it - it definitely exists, and it’s alive and well on this album. Similar to the debut 45 on Going Gaga, they didn’t complete rid themselves of the glam influence. But, I should clarify what I mean by that, ‘cause that can be heinously misleading: What I mean by glam is, say, Dictators “Bloodbrothers”, rather than Lizzy Borden or some shit. “Bloodbrothers” I think pretty much nails it. A largely punk record, with a mild swagger at times (not unlike “Shakey Sue” on this record).

To throw in another Canadian reference, Mother’s Children have the Nothern-Pikes-in-the-1990s syndrome, ie: 3 lead vocalists. Even so, it doesn’t loose any consistency. “No Touch”, sung by bassist Davey (and written by Tim, the one member of the band who doesn’t get a lead vocal spotlight), might be a personal favourite. Although, this record has the charm that it does due to Ken and Mike’s original spin on an overly covered genre. Good work.

Review of the artwork: If I got high a lot, I’d probably stare at this album cover for extended lengths of time. The basis is simple, yet it’s disgustingly detailed. I’ve never seen a two-colour jacket stand out like this. The dark-orange-y tone grabs you on the exterior, then you get lost in the references included as you look closer. Almost looks like a building from the video game Rampage. Great fucking game! The presentation of this release is second to none. Worth it for the jacket alone. (Steve Adamyk)

If you´ve listened to the 7" on Going Gaga Records you already should have known what to expect and keeping in mind that they´ve just been on the road with PAUL COLLINS BEAT even the unaware should know where this platter is going to. Fantastic Powerpop / Punkrock which definitely makes it clear, that the roots of Punkrock in the U.K. are Protopunk, Pubrock and Glam bands like EDDY & THE HOTRODS, 101ERS, THE JOOK, IRON VIRGIN or the HOLLYWOOD BRATS but that can also take the turn back to the bands of the British Invasion like THE KINKS or the early ROLLING STONES but not only this. If not all this would be enough this platter also makes fun like the first one of TEENAGE HEAD. What makes the difference between the MOTHER´S CHILDREN and other bands within this genre is that "That´s who" could easily also be a record coming directly from the Seventies and if you´re honest to yourself even most bands from that period couldn´t make such a strong and inspiring effort on full distance. Whatever it is that makes it possible that the row of at least great if not fantastic bands from Ottawa doesn´t seem to end, counting on me it could go on and on and on.

Up next was Ottawa's own Mother's Children. To quote my buddy, Phil Smith (aka Arm of the Paranoid Squirrel podcast) "I dare you to listen to these guys and not walk away humming a song or two." He's right as tracks like "What'll happen to all the girls?" and "Don't Tell Mom" attest. But what's different about this current crop of rock n' roll bands is that not only can they play catchy tunes but they're fun. To quote one of the band:

"People just wanna go out have fun, listen to exciting, unpretentious bands who know their rock n' roll roots and don't get all caught up in current music fads."

For an old fart like me that sentiment is critical. But don't take my word for it because watching their set, and digging it, was Paul Collins himself. I can't think of better praise than having the guy you're opening for checking you out.

MOTHER'S CHILDREN have been laying low and working hard for a while now. They took an almost half a year break from playing shows while they worked on writing and recording their first LP. After seeing them live a couple of times recently it is plain to see that they've been working hard. Their first LP is called "That's Who!" and is out now courtesy of punk rock/hardcore powerhouse label DERANGED RECORDS. They may seem out of place on this label but if you consider the fact that they've released records for TRANZMITORS, STATUES & THE BAYONETTES - MOTHER'S CHILDREN fit right in.

The record is 11 songs that are a great mix of glam, power pop and catchy rock & roll/punk. MOTHER'S CHILDREN watch SLADE & RASPBERRIES lose a razor fight with THE BOYS & EDDIE AND THE HOT RODS in an alley then they all head to the bar for a drink together.

Punk covers shows are now becoming an tradition for us. In 2008 Mother's Children did an all BOYS cover show. In 2009 we did an all '77 UK Punk Karaoke set. Now in 2010 KJ and Mike are teaming up with Ian from WHITE WIRES and Daniel from BEACH BLANKETS to do a THE BARRACUDAS covers set!!! It almost didn't happen but we decided to have our first practice on Monday. The show is this Saturday!!! Its gonna be awesome, its good summer fun and there's gonna be some other way more punk bands being covered as well.

So much good punk came out of Northern Ireland in the 70s. OK Stiff Little Fingers, the Undertones... Come ON! But what about bands like Protex, Rudi, (early) Radiators From Space, The Moondogs, The Starjets??? Each band had their own unique sound going but they all managed to make insanely catchy and upbeat songs while everything around them seemed to be falling apart.

I'm going "crazy" try to learn the chords for this, I can't figure out the second note in the chorus. Is it just B? it seems slightly off when I do it. I wanna be able to play this song whenever I go up to my room and I slam the door.

Our debut full-length LP is finally on its way!

To be released on the great DERANGED RECORDS out of Vancouver (who've also released great titles by the TRANZMITORS, STATUES, REGULATIONS, BRUTAL KNIGHTS, SEDATIVES and more!)

Estimated it will be out by May but the date is not 100% confirmed yet.

Mother's Children "Dance To The Rock'n'Roll Band" 7"

True single from this Ottawa glam-pop outfit. I'm torn as to whether Mother's Children is a cool name or not. I think I like it. "Dance to the..." is definitely a choice A-Side. Total handclap glam with some good and sticky guitar hooks, simple yet emotive lyrics, bell-bottom drumming, a little bit of platform shoe swagger. A song that's probably been written a million times, but they still do it quite a bit of justice. As good as some Apache material, but sans the doobage. Sadly, they flop on the B-Side, which just sounds like bad (Canadian) power-pop. Shame. If they could've pulled a killer flipside off I was ready to drop a Thundermug reference on them, but I'm putting that one back in the holster. Shit! Still, I can't deny that A-Side is really choice.(RK)

I would've expected a much worse review from Terminal Boredom, I guess I'm pretty stoked on this so-so one.

Being a huge fan of the DAMNED, I must seek out anything DAMNED-related. Especially anything pre-80s, and even more especially anything to do with BRIAN JAMES. His songwriting and guitar chops is what made "Damned Damned Damned" one the best punk albums ever. TANZ DER YOUTH was started by JAMES after he left the DAMNED in 1978; That's all I needed to hear. So I tracked down this single, and well, it's reminiscent of the dark serious British punk bands like the STRANGLERS and MAGAZINE but not really very good. OK at best. TANZ DER YOUTH only made one single. Eventually JAMES would go on to found LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH with Stiv Bators.

"This Ain't All (It's Made Out to Be)" is the B-Side to the wishy-washy "You've Got To Pay" single from 1979. For some reason I haven't been able to find this track listed on any compilations. It shows the rarely seen "rockin" side of the ONLY ONES, and showcases some awesome John Perry guitar work. This is other the song I jam to when "Another Girl..." is played out from excessive listens.

"Going up with my Girl" and "World of Fools" is some of their best stuff, sitting somewhere in-between their 60s Beatles-y sound and their straight-up 80s power pop. Released for the first time in 2008 by Radio Heartbeat Records. I highly suggest you pick up anything you see released on Radio Heartbeat. Easily the coolest new reissue label around!

DAVID QUINTON was the drummer for the Toronto power pop/punk band the MODS, and later was in STIV BATORS' band. This inspired but pretty unknown solo album was released on BOMB Records in 1981, post-STIV. No other band members are credited so I can only assume he played every instrument? I wouldn't say this record is terribly exciting, but there are some very good poppers on here, like "Does it Matter to You", "Out of Control" and a version of "Make up your Mind" that trumps the STIV BATORS version.

"Woman's World" is some near perfect JAGS pop with their trademark vocal melody contesting the styles of JOE JACKSON & ELVIS COSTELLO. THE OUTLETS are a fairly legendary Boston punk band from the early 80s. I knew little about them when I found this 7" in the record bin at Value Village. It just looked well worth 25 cents. This double A-side has two primo tracks of melodic high-energy punk. Kind of reminds me of the REPLACEMENTS, but I actually dig this more. Released in 1982 on the Modern Method label.

BLUE PETER - TEST PATTERNS FOR LIVING EP

BLUE PETER from Toronto (Canada) released this 7 song Punk/New Wave scorcher on Ready Records in 1979. After this, they changed it up in favor of a more New Romantic sound. Nevertheless their first EP "Test Patterns for Living" rules, and the opening track "Same Old Place" is one of the best punk/new wave songs to come out of Canada. Below are my 3 favorite tracks, which includes "Do The Robot." Not the SAINTS song, but it does take some queues from WIRE's "12XU". Download the entire EP. The whole thing is good. I'm sorry that there are surface scratches in some parts!

PEZBAND from Chicago were among of the first and best of the second wave power-poppers. With manginas in full force, the band cranked out 3 great albums between 1977 and 1979. "On and On" remains in my opinion their best song. Just perfectly defines the amalgamation of the words POWER and POP. Everything is there, and everything is just right!

Released on Radar Records in the UK in 1978. Both tracks on this 7" are featured on their second album "Laughing in the Dark", a more modernized departure from their first "s/t" album which sounded a lot more like the RASPBERRIES.

PETE STRIDE & JOHN PLAIN - LAUGH AT ME 7"

My first installment is the great PETE STRIDE & JOHN PLAIN - "Laugh At Me" 45. I picked up this for $1 at Legend Records here in Ottawa a few years ago. You might already know that Stride was the guitarist for THE LURKERS and John Plain was a guitarist for THE BOYS. The side-project released this amazing two-song single in 1980 and an o.k. LP which I managed to pick up in LA. The band is also credited as THE NEW GUITARS. Certainly named after the LURKERS song "New Guitar in Town" which John Plain co-wrote.

The choice A-Side "Laugh at Me" is absolutely fantastic and right up there with 3rd and 4th album era BOYS. I only recently heard the original version by SONNY (of SONNY & CHER), It's a REALLY good folk/pop manifesto, but STRIDE & PLAIN totally made it their own and added a heart-stopping riff to the mix. The B-Side, "Jimmy Brown" is an alternate version of the single by the BOYS. The chorus is the same but the verses are completely different. Not as good as the original but still worthy of a few spins.

We got 2 shows coming up with The City Sweethearts (T.O.) and The Bators (MTL). Two bands that we really like a lot! The first show is on Wednesday in Montreal. I hope that goes OK. (Last time I was in Montreal I got my guitar stolen.) I believe the Sweethearts will have a 7" avallable on Red Lounge Records which I'm very excited to hear.

Then we're playing a house show in Ottawa on Friday night, and it will be a romance explosion! Everybody in Ottawa knows about it, and they can barely contain themselves!

MOM'S KIDS AT BLOOZEFEST CONT'D

Bluesfest was OK! We got to play a huge venue where we've never even gone to see a show. Unfortunately the show was $25, so not too many of our friends could afford to go, but the 400+ venue still managed to be totally full. We opened for a commercial rock band called Wintersleep, who were nice and courteous enough, and the obvious fan faves of the night....

This is the best review we could've hoped for considering the circumstances:

The opening band was called Mother's Children and they were a good band, or at least they sounded pretty good as I don’t believe they used the PA but rather some extremely loud VOX amps so things were sometimes a bit murky. However, stopping by their MySpace today clarified that they are indeed very good. They also had a great vibe on stage and kept the energy level up in the crowd leading up to Wintersleep.

Here's what one moron had to say about us:

Wintersleep was GREAT last night as usual. It was at Captial Music Hall which is a great intimate venue . They blew the crowd away.

The opening band.... wow, not so much. It was Mother's Children and they were probably the WORST band I've seen all year long. They were terrible but were running around on stage like they were the greatest thing to happen to rock in decades. I had to console FH b/c he would give his right arm to open for Wintersleep and his band would have blown these douchebags out of the water.

This girl, who we will simply call Whore Mouth, is the wife of a guy from the band Rebel Year. I listened to Rebel Year and they probably would've been a better choice for this particular show, but we don't care too much about that.

This educated bashing has just earned Whore Mouth her place atop the Mother's Children Black List! Hopefully we'll see our new friend Laura... oops, Whore Mouth, at the next show!

Great glam-influenced punk rock from that other America where the nice folk live way, way up north. A dose of power pop and 60s Brit invasion mixed with a healthy helping of THE JOOK, THE SWEET, and THE INCREDIBLE KIDDA BAND, to name a few. It's brief but sure leaves its mark, and like all great records makes me thump the rickety tables of MRR demanding more. Hard glam at its best. (SD)

We're still reeling from one of the best Saturday Nights of the Summer!

What started out as an innocent Birthday Party/House Show hosted by Davey and MOTHER'S CHILDREN for our pals Steve and Ian, quickly turned into total mindbending rock'n'roll savagery, thanks to impromptu appearances from Montreal's WALNUT KIDS, Toronto's TEENANGER and an army of Tambourinists! All the bands played amazing sets, and everyone lost their minds!

Thanks to everyone who showed up, brought food, brought booze (and gave it to us), partied down, burned effigies, and special thanks to the bands and house tennants!
